Women’s Curlers Olympic Standouts by Convenience Store Sales

SEOUL, Feb. 26 (Korea Bizwire)Going by the revenues convenience store chain 7-Eleven pulled in from February 9 through 24 – the dates when key South Korean performances were held at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics – the winter sport category most rooted for was women’s curling.

An analysis tracking the fluctuations in sales of the seven product categories that sell well when South Koreans are rooting for their country in major sporting events (food, alcoholic drinks, bar snacks, refrigerated products, frozen food, confectionery, beverages) found that sales spiked in the morning of February 15, when South Korea’s “Team Kim” defeated top-ranked Canada in the round robin tournament.

Revenue from the seven product categories was 34.9 percent higher than the same period last year. This marked the highest revenue jump.

Despite the unexpected 8-6 South Korean victory match beginning at 9:05 in the morning, 7-Eleven stated sales of beer (74.9 percent), refrigerated products (76 percent) and frozen food (215.4 percent) all rose.

In third place were speed skater Lee Seung-hoon’s 10,000m event and the Korean women’s curling round-robin match with Japan at night on February 15.

Women’s curling not only took the 1st and 3rd spots, but also ranked 7th, 8th, and 9th on the list of Olympics matches linked to the largest margin of increase in sales of the seven popular product categories.
