Coronavirus Boosts Liquor Sales, but Demand for Hangover Cures Drops

SEOUL, March 27 (Korea Bizwire)Convenience stores are selling more alcoholic beverages, but less hangover helpers in recent months as more people are choosing to drink at home, staying away from binge drinking as delays to the start of the school year have cut the number of meetings and group dinners.

CU, a major convenience store chain, sold 20 percent more alcoholic beverages between March 1 and 24 than last year, a stark increase from annual sales growth of 9.9 percent and 12.3 percent over the past two years.

Wine sales jumped by 39.2 percent, and hard liquor was up 26.5 percent. Other alcoholic beverages including makgeolli (21.1 percent), soju (17.3 percent), and beer (10.4 percent) also saw big sales increases.

Sales of hangover helpers, on the other hand, plunged by 13.9 percent following the coronavirus outbreak in February. In March, sales dropped by 22.5 percent.
