SEOUL, Sept. 18 (Korea Bizwire)The Korean Embassy in the U.K. has decided to join hands with the World Institute of Kimchi, a government entity that falls under the Ministry of Science and Technology, to promote a better understanding of the Korean staple.

The Korean Embassy revealed yesterday that it was holding various events to promote kimchi by working with local municipalities and culinary schools from September 18 to 22.

The demand for kimchi in the U.K. accounts for 42 percent of all imports of kimchi to the European Union.

However, throughout London, there are many instances in which unidentifiable kimchi-related dishes and recipes are being introduced, which is why the government has stepped up its efforts to use this opportunity to create a more accurate awareness of kimchi.

Kicking off with a seminar on kimchi for local chefs at the Korean Cultural Center in London, a promotional booth will be set up at the Korean Festival to be held in Kingston, a neighborhood that is home to many Koreans.

A class on how to make kimchi will be held at Le Cordon Bleu in London, while at the Korean ambassador’s residence, British dignitaries will be invited for a dinner feast featuring various dishes inspired by kimchi.

Of note, Lee Ha-yeon, one of the five existing kimchi masters, will visit London to give lectures and demonstrate the art of making kimchi.

Park En-na, the first female Korean ambassador to the U.K., said that the visit by Lee would be an opportunity to publicize Korean culture to British opinion leaders.

“The embassy will expand efforts to promote Korea in the future,” said the ambassador.
