Liquor Sales Jump Following Worsening Coronavirus Pandemic and Lengthy Monsoon Season

SEOUL, Aug. 19 (Korea Bizwire) Online liquor sales are soaring as a growing number of South Koreans are choosing to drink at home following a record-setting monsoon season and surge in new coronavirus cases.

Convenience store chain CU reported that pre-ordered wine sales between Aug. 1 and 16 jumped more than fivefold compared to June 1 to 16, when pre-order sales first began.

High-end wines that cost over 150,000 won (US$127), in particular, comprised 30 percent of all wine sales.

Online sales of liquor-related accessories also jumped. G9, an online shopping mall, reported that between Jan. 1 and Aug. 12, sales of liquor accessories jumped by 169 percent compared to the same period last year.

Sales of liquor cups and glasses jumped by 167 percent, while sales of tea tables and wine racks jumped by 97 percent and 121 percent, respectively.

French fries, a popular side dish for beer, and cheese, which is commonly paired with wine, saw sales jump by 206 percent and 283 percent, respectively.
