SEOUL, March 20 (Korea Bizwire) — The unit price of furniture sold in 2017 dropped from a year earlier, while that of consumer electronics rose amid shifting consumer trends centered on single and two-person households, industry sources said Tuesday.
The unit price for furniture fell 3 percent on average, with prices for sofas and tables dropping 7 and 10 percent each, according the statistics provided by Gmarket, an online shopping mall.
Sales of “Do It Yourself (DIY)” furniture, meanwhile, rose about 10 percent on-year, Gmarket said.
The unit price for consumer electronics, however, jumped 10 percent last year from the previous year with those of air purifiers, air conditioners and stylers, a garment care system, soaring 89 percent, 315 percent and 315 percent, respectively.
“The trend is a combination of minimalism and maximalism in which sales of cheap furniture and expensive home appliances, such as air purifiers and drying machines, are on the rise with the growing number of households with one or two members,” a GMarket official said.
