SEOUL, April 10 (Korea Bizwire) — Seoul announced on April 9 that it will begin subsidizing 500 environmentally friendly electric scooters per year with the goal of helping cover the cost of 4,700 of the vehicles total by 2025.
A city representative said, “Electric two-wheelers don’t produce emissions damaging to the atmosphere because they lack internal combustion engines. By providing financial aid in the distribution of these vehicles, the city will help improve air quality.”
Like one’s iPhone, an electric two-wheeler can be charged by plugging the charging cable into any household wall socket. Taking approximately four hours to fully charge, electric two-wheelers are unlike the average electric car in that they do not require a dedicated charging station. On a full battery, these scooters can travel up to approximately 40km. Yearly spending on fuel amounts to ten percent of a motorcycle equipped with a standard engine.
The Ministry of Environment has selected six types of motorcycles that are applicable for subsidies ranging from 2.3 million won to 3.5 million won per vehicle.
Starting yesterday, manufacturers and sellers of the relevant motorcycles can apply to the city for subsidies once they have received orders from customers.
