SEOUL, May 14 (Korea Bizwire) — Seoul city is planning to employ 1,000 citizens as animal rights monitoring agents until 2020, according to a statement presented at an open debate about animal rights on May 12.
The city is set to develop five more pet playgrounds in Seoul, achieve registrations of more than 600,000 pets, neutralize 10,000 stray cats, give seminars on animal rights for 50,000 citizens and employ 1,000 animal rights monitoring agents, until 2020.
The city will oblige animal sellers to be authorized to sell birds, amphibians and fish, in a bid to stop the influx of unauthorized animals in Seoul, and will also introduce other measures to prevent animal abandonment, while increasing funding for animal rights programs.
The number of abandoned animals in Seoul decreased 48.7 percent to 9,551 in 2014 from 18,624 in 2010. However, only 29 percent of abandoned animals were adopted, while 34 percent were put down and 14 percent died of natural causes.
