SEOUL, Jul. 12 (Korea Bizwire) — Google has launched a children’s pop-up exhibition at the National Museum of Korea which allows visitors to engage with the arts, using the latest artificial intelligence and virtual reality technology to draw digital pictures and enjoy high-resolution images of famous paintings.
Dubbed ‘Google Arts & Culture Pop-Up Lab’, the collaboration between the National Museum of Korea and Google Korea is the first technology-themed art project launched by the international IT giant in Asia following similar exhibitions in France and Germany.
It’s also the first time the company has held a children’s exhibition where visitors can nurture their creativity and imagination through the experience of mixing both art and technology.
Laurent Gaveau, the leader of the Google Cultural Institute Lab, chose the National Museum of Korea as the venue for Google’s latest arts and culture project after visiting the museum during his stay in South Korea for last year’s International Council on Archives Congress.
“South Korea is one of the most dynamic places among some 70 countries around the world that we are working with,” Gaveau said.
Gaveau says he has great interest in South Korea as he has been launching a new project almost every three months since 2012, when he first began working in the country.
In response to worries that making art exhibitions available online could see fewer people interested in paying a visit in person to museums and galleries, Gaveau addressed the issue by saying, “When people look at art work online, it could prompt them to want to appreciate the art pieces in person.”
Han Su, an official at the museum, said, “Statistics suggest collaboration with Google’s art project can attract more visitors to museums.”
Another official at the museum, Lee Yung-hoon, said, “Featuring Google’s state-of-the-art technology, the pop-up lab will give children visiting the exhibition an opportunity to have a deeper understanding of arts and culture and familiarize themselves with museums.”
The exhibition, which kicked off on Tuesday, will be open until August 27 at the National Museum of Korea’s Children’s Museum.
Entry is free, and those who wish to participate in the museum’s guided programs for children can obtain more information at https://goo.gl/zwFiwM.
