SEOUL, May 16 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s industry ministry said Thursday it has promoted the Carbon-Free Energy initiative (CFE) during an energy ministerial meeting held in Indonesia this week, in line with efforts to promote the use of clean energy to address climate change.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, South Korea made the proposal during the Clean Energy Ministerial, which began its three-day run in Bali on Wednesday, where participants discussed ways to speed up the transition to clean energy sources.

During the meeting, South Korea proposed the launch of a workstream for the CFE, which was proposed by President Yoon Suk Yeol during his keynote speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

The initiative focuses on achieving the carbon neutrality target by harnessing carbon-free energy sources. Various countries, including Japan, Britain, France and Saudi Arabia, have expressed support and consensus for the initiative.

The proposed task force will expand cooperation among member countries in terms of policy, technology and infrastructure to address the inequality caused by climate change, the ministry added.

“Within the framework of the Clean Energy Ministerial, the workstream will promote the use of carbon-free energy sources and discuss detailed cooperation to ease climate inequality,” Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun said in a video speech delivered at the meeting.

The ministry plans to make efforts to formally launch the workstream at the ministerial meeting slated to be held in Brazil in October.
