16 pct of Korean Women Subject to Violence by Spouse/Partners: Survey

SEOUL, Aug. 30 (Korea Bizwire)A significant percentage of women in South Korea have been subject to violence by a past or current spouse or partner, a survey showed Monday.

The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family conducted a survey of 7,000 women over 19 years of age, 16.1 percent of whom said they had been subject to physical, sexual, psychological or economic violence and control by a past or current spouse or partner.

Among the respondents, 10.6 percent said they had been subject to physical or sexual violence by their intimate partners.

For women with disabilities, 22.2 percent had been subject to violence, which was higher than non-disabled women (15.9 percent).

The data also showed that 5 percent of the respondents had been subject to dating violence, among which 3.5 percent involved physical and sexual violence.

Among victims of dating violence, 43.2 percent had been subject to sexual violence, followed by physical violence (37.8 percent), psychological violence (36.4 percent), control (26.1 percent) and economic violence (2.1 percent).

Another 2.5 percent of the respondents had been subject to stalking while 0.2 percent said they had been stalked in the previous 12 months.
