SEOUL, May 5 (Korea Bizwire) – Bae (age 30), an Afreeca TV BJ (broadcasting host), was indicted without detention after being charged with reckless driving by law enforcement agents in Guro, Seoul, as announced on May 4.
On April 1 at 11:20 PM, Bae drove his Volkswagen Golf recklessly by driving dangerously close to an Audi in front of him on the Gangbyeon Expressway in Mapo-gu’s Sangam-dong.
The police reported Bae was driving 5.5 km, and attempting to instigate the other driver, repeatedly ‘knife cutting in’ (an illegal move in which a driver constantly changes lanes and cuts in between cars) and ‘zig zag driving’ to provoke the driver of the Audi into a race. However, the race never took place as the driver of the Audi ignored Bae’s tactics and left the expressway through an interchange.
Bae live broadcasted the whole endeavor on Afreeca TV by arranging for an acquaintance to follow behind and film from another car. Due to live broadcasts of similar crimes, the police had been monitoring Afreeca TV in real-time and caught Bae in action.
“I did it to gain more star balloons and share something fun with foreign-made car club members,” Bae testified. ‘Star balloons’ are cyber money used as currency on Afreeca TV, which viewers purchase and then send to BJs as gifts. Each star balloon is reported to cost 110 won.
