SEOUL, Sept. 26 (Korea Bizwire) – The Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) announced Sunday that will be revising its regulations on broadcasting deliberation in an effort to promote gender equality on television programs and for online video content.
The amendment comes as a measure to combat Korea’s recently-expanding gender hatred culture, and will ban all gender-discriminating expressions such as treating a specific sex as inferior, favoring specific characteristics of a gender, and describing prostitution and sexual assault and harassment in detail.
South Korean online communities have seen a growing number of cases of gender contempt based around extremist communities like Ilbe and Megalian. The number of sexual harassment victims, including hidden cameras and revenge porn, has also been rising over the years.
The Ministry of Gender Equality & Family recently recommended that the commission clarify the regulations, so that Korea’s seemingly-ambiguous constitutional article guaranteeing protection against gender discrimination is better enforced.
In fact, of 2,814 reported cases over the past three years, only 26 were found to be in violation of the gender equality law by the KCSC for administrative guidance. Court sanctions were applied in only 14 cases, including official warnings and program suspensions.
Meanwhile, the amendment also forbids degrading specific dialects or regional backgrounds, including North Korean accents and North Korean refugees and defectors.
