SEOUL, May 10 (Korea Bizwire) – Around half of South Korean single men say they would be proud if their wife of the future brought in more income than themselves, according to a recent report.
The new study conducted with the participation of 594 South Korean single men and women by marriage agencies Bien Aller and Only You revealed nearly 46 percent of the male respondents said they would be proud of their spouse if she made more than them, while 32.7 percent said it’s normal that some women can make more than their male counterparts.
Only 21.5 percent said making less than their partner would hurt their pride.
In contrast, the majority of the female respondents said it would hurt their pride if they made more income than their husband, with only 36.7 percent saying they would be proud of themselves.
Answers also differed between men and women when it came to the income dynamics of working couples, as over 60 percent of men said they don’t care who earns more, while nearly 88 percent of women said husbands should earn more than their wives.
Son Dong-gyu, the head of marriage agency Bien Aller, said, “With the recent sluggish economy, a lot of men are putting reality before pride.”
“As a lot of women continue to believe that men must be the main breadwinners, some disagreement is expected between couples,” he added.
