JEJU, Sept. 1 (Korea Bizwire) — Around 8 out of 10 local residents and South Korean tourists believe the Olle Trail has made a significant contribution to Jeju Island’s tourism industry over the last decade, a survey has found.
The survey conducted with a sample of over 600 people by the Jeju Development Institute in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the island’s signature trail showed both local residents and tourists predominantly see the Olle Trail as a major contributing factor behind the growth of Jeju’s tourism industry.
Over 70 percent of both groups said the Olle Trail has also contributed to other tourist spots in areas around the trail, creating a trickle-down effect.
When asked about the effect of the famous trail on both physical and mental health, the majority of respondents answered positively.
However, over 80 percent of both local residents and visitors expressed the need for more access to the trail via public transport.
The study also found creating a safe environment for visitors to explore and finding business models for local residents to benefit from the increase in tourism are among the challenges facing the future of the Olle Trail.
