SEOUL, April 14 (Korea Bizwire) —Korea ranked fifth in the world for the number of clinical trials conducted by pharmaceutical companies in 2021, according to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the Korea Clinical Trials Support Foundation. The United States was in first place, followed by China, Spain, and Germany.

Seoul ranked first among cities for clinical trials. Despite an increase in clinical trials globally, the number of domestic clinical approvals regressed to 711 in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and a reduction in drug development research. Clinical trials conducted by researchers without sponsorship from pharmaceutical companies also decreased in number and share.
