Majority of Koreans Claim PyeongChang Olympics Were a Success

SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Korea Bizwire)A recent survey revealed that 81.4 percent of the South Korean public saw the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics as a “success”.

The economic effects of the Games were calculated to be 41.6 trillion won in terms of productivity and added value, while having induced employment for 232,000 people.

This is according to Dr. Lee Jae-hyeong of the Korea Development Institute, who surveyed 1,011 adults in April of this year via the phone to inquire about the perception among the general public of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

According to the survey, 66.2 percent were “interested,” 26.7 percent were “somewhat interested,” 6.9 percent were “disinterested,” and 0.2 percent said they “did not know” or failed to respond when asked about the Olympic Games.

When asked to critique the outcome of the Olympics, 81.4 percent of respondents said the Games were a “success,” while 13.5 percent said they were “normal,” 3.4 percent stated they were a “failure,” and 1.7 percent either said they “did not know” or failed to respond.

The study also found that white collar workers (85.4 percent) and those with “very progressive political inclinations” were highly interested in the Olympics.

Meanwhile, conservative members of the population and students were found to have negative opinions of the Games.
