SEOUL, Sept. 9 (Korea Bizwire) – Despite the government’s introduction of digital sexual crime eradication measures in 2020, the number of such crimes grew sharply due to the aftereffects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the South Korean regulator said Thursday.
According to data from the Korea Communications Standards Commission, the number of digital sexual crime report cases stood at 11,568 last year, up 82 percent year on year.
For the January to August period of this year, the number of such cases reached 11,156, similar to last year’s total.
Meanwhile, the number of obscenity crime occurrence and detection cases using communication media rose from 2,047 and 1,701 cases in 2020 to 5,067 and 3,956 cases last year, according to data from the National Police Agency.
For the January to July period of this year, the number of such cases stood at 5,937 and 4,500, exceeding last year’s total.
Digital sexual crimes surged on the back of the increase in online activities resulting from the pandemic and the increase in Internet-based single-person broadcasting.
