SEOUL, Sept. 15 (Korea Bizwire)As delivery services are becoming a crucial part of daily life following the coronavirus outbreak, the ensuing delivery waste is rising as an environmental risk.

While consumers and food vendors agree that using eco-friendly packaging materials is important, their high cost and the risk of lower food quality are preventing them from taking robust measures.

The Korea Agro-Fisheries and Food Trade Corp. conducted an online awareness survey of 303 consumers, 98.3 percent of whom showed interest in sustainable food packaging.

The problem, however, lies in food deliveries. Only 35 percent stayed away from food deliveries because of unsustainable packaging materials, which was only half of what they said about processed food products.

A similar survey of 123 people working at restaurants showed that 30.1 percent use sustainable packaging materials, while 48 percent planned on using them in the future.

Another 71.5 percent said the higher cost was the primary downside of transitioning into sustainable packaging.
