SEOUL, Jun. 22 (Korea Bizwire) — Coins Given to Needy Students
The coins that visitors to Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon stream threw into the Palseokdam fountain for good luck have been collected as scholarship money to help underprivileged students.
The Seoul Scholarship Foundation announced yesterday that it had selected 20 students this year to be recipients of a Cheonggyecheon “Dream” Scholarship. The scholarships, supporting talented young individuals from specialized schools, were first initiated in 2015 as the Seoul Facilities Corporation started to donate coins collected from Cheonggyecheon’s Palseokdam.
The corporation donated the 30 million won in coins collected last year from Palseokdam to the Seoul Scholarship Foundation. The 20 students chosen as recipients will receive 1 million won per year for two years to fund their studies. The Seoul Scholarship Foundation has funded a total of 80 students since 2015 with scholarships amounting to 200 million won.
