SEOUL, April 26 (Korea Bizwire) – The number of South Korean men who want to divorce their foreign spouse has quadrupled over the last six years, according to a report released by the Korea Legal Aid Center for family relations yesterday.
The report, which was based on multicultural married couples who received divorce counseling last year, revealed the number of couples who want to end their marriage is on the rise, from 472 cases in 2010 to 955 in 2016.
Among multicultural couples seeking divorce, an increasing number of South Korean husbands are reported to have initiated the process.
In 2010, less than 30 percent of the applicants for the divorce counseling service at the Korea Legal Aid Center for family relations were couples consisting of a South Korean man with a foreign spouse.
The figure has since more than doubled, reaching 64.1 percent in 2016.
The number of cases of divorce counseling requested by South Korean men with a foreign spouse quadrupled from 2010 to 2016, while the number for foreign spouses married to a South Korean husband remained about the same, according to the free consulting firm.
One official at the legal aid center said, “Before 2013, it was mostly foreign spouses seeking divorce due to verbal abuse and domestic violence on their husband and his family’s part, but lately, more South Korean men are considering divorcing their spouse from a foreign country who had an affair or ran away from home.”
