“The Internet of Things will be a game changer. It is the most important topic for our industry right now and it is something that will revolutionize our lives and unlock infinite possibilities. Samsung is prepared to play a leading role here.”
“We need an open ecosystem so that IoT devices work together, and we need to collaborate across industries. On behalf of Samsung, I’m making a promise: our IoT components and devices will be open. Without openness, there won’t be an Internet of Things, because the ‘things’ will not fit together.”
- Yoon Boo-Keun, CEO of Samsung Electronics at his CES 2015 keynote speech
“Something new, beautiful and convenient is innovation, I think. We will lead the market by developing IoT technology which can upgrade lifestyle by adding LG’s technology to an open platform.”
“The Internet of Things isn’t about just some devices and the apps that control them. It’s what connects everything we value with the innovations that are centered around our lives. At LG, we’re taking an open approach to maximize the value offered to our customers through platforms, connectivity and the overall IoT ecosystem.”
- Skott Ahn, CTO of LG Electronics at LG press conference at CES 2015
SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Electronics has promised to create an open system to kickstart an Internet of Things (IoT) revolution, along with more than $100m in funding for developers. Separately, LG Electronics declared that it would lead the IoT market based on an open platform.
In his keynote speech titled “Unlocking the Infinite Possibilities of IoT” at CES 2015 being held in Las Vegas, Yoon Boo-keun, CEO of Samsung Electronics, said, “Many people think it’s in the distant future. It’s not. It’s ready to go. Based on technology centering on people, we will realize infinite possibilities.”
For this, Yoon promised to help developers form an IoT environment by investing more than $100bn into the community.
Meanwhile, LG Electronics was also explaining the details of its IoT development strategy. Skott Ahn, CTO of LG, picked the differentiation of platforms, strengthening of connectivity among devices, and openness as the key elements of its IoT strategy.
At CES 2015, LG Electronics unveiled its upgraded webOS 2.0 smart TV platform, which offers an even simpler user experience, and introduced “Wellness,” a platform that cares for customers’ wellness instead of just tracking and reporting it. The Wellness platform can manage health and living environments based on LG’s bio-signal analysis technologies for smartphones and wearable devices that can control appliances such as water heaters and air conditioners.
Ahn also unveiled LG’s plan to expand the IoT ecosystem by collaborating with remote control technology companies to enhance connectivity between devices. To raise interoperability with devices of different brands, LG will strengthen its partnership with the AllJoyn open connectivity platform, an IoT platform from AllSeen Alliance, and oneM2M, the global standard for IoT services.
