SEOUL, Aug. 27 (Korea Bizwire) – LG Electronics’ 10-year commitment to information technology (IT) education in Ethiopia is showing significant results, highlighting the power of corporate social responsibility in driving economic development.
On August 24, the capital city of Addis Ababa hosted the graduation ceremony for the Ethiopia LG-KOICA Hope TVET College and celebrated the school’s 10th anniversary.
This vocational training institution, a collaborative effort between LG and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), was established as a gesture of gratitude towards Ethiopia, the only African nation to send ground troops during the Korean War.
The school, operated by the international development NGO World Together, provides free technical education in electrical, electronic, and IT-related fields to Ethiopian youth. It aims to support their post-graduation employment and entrepreneurship, fostering their growth as productive members of society.
Since its inception, the school has produced 541 graduates, including 83 this year, boasting a remarkable 100% employment or entrepreneurship rate. Graduates have successfully entered the workforce, joining companies like LG Electronics or starting their own businesses using their acquired skills.
LG Electronics emphasizes that this long-term educational support has cultivated hundreds of IT professionals, positively impacting Ethiopia’s economic growth.
The country has recorded an average annual economic growth rate of about 11% over the past decade and has been actively investing in IT as a new growth engine under its Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy since 2020.
The anniversary event was attended by notable figures including Solomon Soka, Vice Minister of Employment and Labor of Ethiopia; Jung Kang, Ambassador to Ethiopia; Kim Yong-woo, Chairman of World Together; and Lee Il-hwan, LG Electronics’ Regional Representative for the Middle East and Africa.
