SEOUL, Dec. 11 (Korea Bizwire) – McDonald’s Korea announced on Tuesday its commitment to converting all packaging materials used in its restaurants to recyclable or renewable materials by next year.
This move positions the company as a leader in sustainability within the country’s quick-service restaurant (QSR) industry.
As part of this initiative, McDonald’s Korea will introduce bio-wax wrappers, marking the first adoption of this eco-friendly material among QSR brands in South Korea.
These wrappers, coated with natural extracts from sources such as sunflower seeds and corn, are already in use at select McDonald’s locations abroad.
The company estimates that transitioning to sustainable materials will reduce its annual plastic usage by 141 tons. Additionally, McDonald’s Korea will expand the use of 100% recycled PET (r-PET) cups and lids to all takeaway beverages and coffee, building on their current application in sundae ice cream containers.
A McDonald’s Korea representative stated, “We are on track to achieve our goal of fully transitioning to recyclable or renewable packaging by next year, with approximately 89% of the objective already completed.”
This initiative underscores McDonald’s Korea’s broader commitment to environmentally conscious business practices.
