SEOUL, July 28 (Korea Bizwire) — New technology has been developed that enables the prediction of inundation or flood risks on a grid basis without the need to install water level or rainfall monitoring stations.
The technology, created by the Korea Institute of Construction Technology, calculates the flooding volume by inputting historical rainfall data from specific areas that experienced flood damage into a grid-based flood prediction model at the cell level.
Subsequently, this information is transformed into values representing the depth of flooding, which serve as risk criteria for flood forecasting.
Utilizing the institute’s model, the entire country can be divided into 1-kilometer grid units, and the level of flooding risk can be calculated for each unit.
In the event of heavy rains, the real-time risk calculated through the model is compared with pre-calculated risk values. If it exceeds the established criteria, a risk forecast is issued.
This technology can predict the risk of inundation or flood even for urban areas and small streams, where water level or rainfall monitoring is challenging.
