ULLEUNG, June 8 (Korea Bizwire) — A monument erected to commemorate the nation’s inaugural swim between Ulleung Island and Dokdo, which was lost during a typhoon, has been reconstructed.
Dokdo Saranghoe (Association of Love for Dokdo), a civic group that defends the Dokdo islets, which Japan claims as its territory, on Tuesday held an unveiling ceremony for the restored monument on Ulleung Island.
The team of swimmers at Dokdo Saranghoe achieved successful swims between Dokdo and Ulleung Island on two separate occasions in 2004 and 2005.
In 2016, the civic group erected the monument at the departure site of the swim to commemorate this historic feat.
However, this monument was lost during Typhoon Maysak’s impact on the country in 2020.
