SEOUL, June 28 (Korea Bizwire) — Women’s burden of domestic work, such as cleaning and childcare, continues even into old age, an analysis of data showed Tuesday.
Statistics Korea analyzed the lifecycle deficit using the newly-developed NTTA (National Time Transfer Accounts) statistics.
The analysis revealed that the younger generation, aged 0 to 14, had a lifecycle deficit of 131.6 trillion won (US$101 billion) as of 2019, indicating that their consumption exceeds the production of household labor.
This is because instead of engaging in domestic work, they only receive care and household management, such as cleaning, from their parents.
The working age group, aged 15 to 64, recorded a surplus of 128.1 trillion won. They took responsibility for most domestic work, including household management, childcare, and volunteer activities.
The elderly group, aged over 65, recorded a surplus of 3.5 trillion won.
Men had a surplus starting at the age of 31 and turned to a deficit at 47, while women had a surplus starting at 25 and turned to a deficit at 84.
Based on the peak surplus age of 38, men had an average surplus of 2.59 million won, while women had an average surplus of 18.48 million won.
This can be interpreted as women performing domestic work about seven times more than men during the peak burden of household chores.
