SEOUL, July 6 (Korea Bizwire) — HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world’s leading shipbuilder by orders, said Wednesday it has developed an eco-friendly heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system for ships using ammonia as a refrigerant.
HD Hyundai Heavy has won an approval in principle (AIP) for the system from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), a U.S. quality assurance and risk management company.
Up until now, the use of ammonia has been primarily limited to industrial freezing and cooling systems on land, mainly due to concerns regarding flammability and toxicity.
To ensure the safety of the system, the company has implemented several precautionary measures.
These include the installation of a separate dedicated space for ammonia refrigeration, as well as the establishment of gas detectors, alarms, and an emergency air ventilation system to address the risk of ammonia leaks.
In order to minimize costs, the company has positioned the ammonia refrigeration units in close proximity to the HVAC air conditioning system, which is located in the living area of the seafarers.
