SEOUL, Oct. 23 (Korea Bizwire) The U.N. cultural agency has established a South Korea-proposed award to recognize efforts in nurturing education on global issues, such as human rights, sustainability and diversity, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.

The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization made the decision during its executive board meeting in Paris on Tuesday (local time). The award will be given to two organizations or entities, with a prize of US$50,000 each, biennially starting in 2025, the ministry said.

Global citizenship education refers to civic learning aimed at fostering global understanding of universal values, such as peace, human rights and cultural diversity, and the concept is included in the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

An international jury consisting of independent experts will make recommendations for winning candidates, and the UNESCO director general will pick the final winners.

The establishment of the award is expected to help gather exemplary cases of global citizenship education and promote the spirit of peace and mutual respect throughout the international community, the ministry said.
