SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Korea Bizwire) – Various technical regulations that were blocking the diversification of services among pay TV providers such as cable networks (SO) will be moderated.
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning announced that it will be drafting an item on ways to restructure the current regulations. Various technical methods could be chosen by current SO, satellite broadcasting and IPTV providers, which are limited in the technology that they can make use of under current regulations.
Restrictions on the usage of frequencies will be abolished, allowing SOs to adopt new technologies and services easily.
In addition, regulations related to broadcasting equipment will be rationalized, such as minimizing the items that are checked during government investigations.
The Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) is looking into reforming the system of authorizing pay TV providers, so that they can adopt services that combine technologies regarding networks or transfer systems. In other words, the way an SO receives content from a program provider and sends it out to service providers such as KT, SK Broadband and LG U+, which provide the received content to the users through IPTV networks, could be changed by combining new technologies.
The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning will reflect the ideas of related organizations, drafting a policy plan by the end of December so that it can start the restructuring of related legislation next year.
