SEOUL, March 24 (Korea Bizwire) – In an era when artificial intelligence (AI) has advanced to a level so high that it can beat a human in a ‘Go’ match, it was revealed that men think even love can be replaced with AI, while women remain skeptical.
Matchmaking agency Duo announced the results of a survey about ‘AI and love’ in which they asked 394 single individuals (191 males and 203 females) what they thought about the matter.
The results showed that 57.1 percent of men thought that ‘AI could one day replace love’, but 68 percent of women replied that it couldn’t.
To the question, ‘what aspects of a relationship can be replaced with AI’, ‘physical contact’ (41.9 percent) topped the rankings. ‘Preparing presents and events’ (36 percent) ranked second, followed by ‘relationship advice’ (16 percent). The respondents were skeptical that AI could replace ‘love’ (5.6 percent) and ‘marriage’ (0.5 percent).
Men picked the largest benefit of ‘dating a robot’ to be the fact that ‘they don’t ask for anything’ (34.6 percent). ‘Relationships would be free because the robot’s power can be turned off’ (30.4 percent) was next, and ‘things would be so easy’ (14.1 percent) followed.
However, women answered that the merits of dating a robot were that they could ‘program the robot to do as they want’ (41.9 percent), ‘there is no emotional drain’ (21.2 percent), and ‘they don’t ask for anything’ (13.3 percent).
Men and women both pointed out that ‘feelings can’t be shared and sympathizing is impossible’ (51.3 percent of men and 38.9 percent of women), making it impossible to replace love with AI.
The male participants also responded that ‘one-sided love would be tiresome’ (16.2 percent), while female respondents answered that ‘the perfect actions of a robot might be creepy’ (26.1 percent) and ‘it could love anyone else besides me’ (16.7 percent).
The results showed that women had a more negative view of AI compared to men. While 71.4 percent of women were ‘uncomfortable and scared’ at the development of AI, only 48.2 percent of men felt that way. Also, more men were interested in further development of AI (35.1 percent), while only 12.8 percent of women were excited at improved AI technology.
