CHANGWON, Apr. 25 (Korea Bizwire) — Farmland near Junam Reservoir in the city of Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, a popular destination for migratory birds, will turn into a pesticide-free farming complex that helps both the birds and the environment.
Changwon, the Morning of Junam, a farming association, and the Machangjin Federation for Environmental Movement signed an agreement to create a natural farming complex in Junam Reservoir.
Based on the agreement, the Morning of Junam will grow rice in the farmland near the reservoir using a method that does not involve the use of pesticides, starting this year.
Changwon will provide farming equipment, while the Machangjin Federation will offer consultations on eco-friendly farming techniques.
Tundra swans, white-naped cranes, wild geese, baikal teals, and other migratory birds come to Junam Reservoir in the millions every winter.
Changwon is purchasing private land near the Junam Reservoir to prevent excessive development, providing residents with subsidies to grow crops to feed the birds in the winter.
