SEOUL, Feb. 6 (Korea Bizwire) – The Nakdonggang National Institute of Biological Resources Institute, which operates under the Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with a research ream led by professor Kim Jin-woo from Sun Moon University’s Department of Food Science, has discovered that the freshwater microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana could play a role in halting the growth and spread of liver cancer cells.

The research team found that when extracts of Chlorella sorokiniana were applied to liver cancer cells (Hep3B), their activity decreased without affecting the normal cells (HDF).

Furthermore, the extract inhibited the expression of cancer-associated genes (Bcl-2, VEGF) that contribute to liver cancer cell growth, while promoting the expression of genes involved in cancer cell death (AMPK-α, Bax, caspase-3).

Given the high content of antioxidants in Chlorella sorokiniana, the research team investigated its potential anti-cancer properties, concluding that the extract effectively suppresses liver cancer cell proliferation and metastasis selectively.

This finding opens up new possibilities for the development of natural extract materials for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer. A patent for the study’s findings was filed in December of last year.
