SEOUL, April 13 (Korea Bizwire) —Google Korea employees formed a labor union affiliated with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) on April 11, after Alphabet, Google’s parent company, announced a 6% reduction in its total workforce, affecting about 12,000 people based at its headquarters. Earlier this month, Google Korea informed its employees in South Korea that their positions were being abolished, which was communicated as an advisory resignation.
The union affiliated with the KCTU aims to enhance the job security, working conditions, and benefits of Google Korea’s workforce. It plans to unite around 850 employees, consisting of 680 workers from Google Korea and 170 staff from Google Cloud Korea. Despite being renowned as the “dream workplace” for four consecutive years, Google Korea has followed in the footsteps of other major tech firms, such as Twitter, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta, by implementing job cuts, as revealed by the office finance union.
