SEOUL, Nov. 9 (Korea Bizwire) — In line with the increasing prevalence of eco-friendly cars, the South Korean government has decided to strengthen inspection standards for electric vehicles (EVs).
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will make an advance legislation notice about the revision of the Enforcement Regulation of the Automobile Management Act by the end of this month.
Included in the revision is a provision that requires regular inspection of the insulation and operating state of the high voltage electric components in EVs.
Unlike general passenger cars that have to go for a regular inspection once every two years, starting from four years after new cars are bought, EVs currently undergo a cursory inspection.
At present, there is no inspection standard for the insulation and operating state of the main components of EVs such as high voltage batteries or motors.
Against this backdrop, the revision makes it a rule to strictly diagnose the insulation and operating state of the high voltage electric components in EVs and disqualify vehicles with problems in such components from the test.
To this end, the government plans to supply a general-purpose electric component tester developed by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority to the private vehicle inspection centers from the latter half of next year.
The revision also includes a provision that makes it obligatory to check the operating state of the device that generates an alarm sound for low-noise vehicles.
This device is designed to generate an alarm sound to let pedestrians know when a low noise vehicle like an EV is approaching.
