UIJONGBU, Apr. 24 (Korea Bizwire) – The Gyeonggi provincial government has announced a new initiative to support pet owners who adopt rescue animals by subsidizing pet insurance premiums. The program, called the “Adopted Animal Assurance Insurance Support Project,” aims to reduce the financial burden of caring for adopted animals and promote a culture of pet adoption.

Under this project, launched in collaboration with DB Insurance Company, the province will provide free insurance coverage worth approximately 200,000 won per adopted animal. The plan is to support around 1,000 rescued animals this year.

The Adopted Animal Assurance Insurance policy covers medical expenses for injuries and illnesses, as well as liability costs, for one year from the date of enrollment. Key benefits include inpatient and outpatient treatment costs up to 200,000 won per day, surgical treatment expenses up to 2 million won per procedure, and liability coverage up to 10 million won per incident.

To be eligible for the subsidized insurance, dogs and cats must have been adopted from provincial or municipal government-run animal shelters or contracted facilities on or after January 1, 2023. Applications can be submitted through the respective shelter where the animal was adopted.

“Through this insurance premium support program, we hope to alleviate residents’ concerns about potential illnesses or accidents involving their adopted rescue pets,” said Kim Jong-hoon, director of the Gyeonggi Province Livestock and Animal Welfare Bureau. “We expect this initiative to spark greater interest in adopting rescued animals among our residents, leading to an increase in adoption rates.”
