BUSAN, Dec. 9 (Korea Bizwire)The 37th annual Haeundae Polar Bear Festival, a hallmark winter sports event in Busan, concluded its three-day run from December 6 to 8, drawing enthusiastic participants and spectators alike.

This year’s event marked the return of the highly anticipated 1km Companion Swim, which had been canceled last year due to strong winds and high waves. Swimmers, organized into groups, dove into the chilly sea starting at 8 a.m., showcasing their endurance and skill over the 1-kilometer course.

Adding to the excitement, the Polar Bear Running Race, held for the second consecutive year, captivated visitors with its playful and competitive spirit. Participants donned inflatable polar bear suits for a lively footrace, with Kim Dae-ho (31, Ulsan) emerging as the ultimate winner.

A host of activities accompanied the main events, including a Polar Bear photo zone, snow globe displays, sports challenges against “polar bears,” and an ice bucket challenge. These features transformed Haeundae Beach into a vibrant winter playground.

First launched in 1988 to commemorate the Seoul Olympics, the Haeundae Polar Bear Festival has grown into a celebrated tradition. In 2011, the BBC recognized it as one of the “Top 10 Unique Winter Sports Events in the World,” cementing its status as a global attraction.

As the festival wrapped up another successful year, it reaffirmed its reputation as a distinctive winter experience that celebrates Busan’s vibrant coastal culture.
