SEOUL, March 27 (Korea Bizwire) — Shinhan Card announced on Thursday the launch of TripPass, a new finance and identity verification platform designed to enhance the experience of foreign tourists and residents in South Korea.
The platform offers seamless digital services from identity authentication to payments, and is accompanied by two types of prepaid cards.
Developed in collaboration with Road System, the TripPass mobile app enables users to create a digital passport through a contactless verification process. This feature allows foreign travelers to verify their identity without carrying a physical passport, making it easier to access duty-free shops and claim tax refunds.
TripPass also supports barcode-based and online payment systems, and allows users to transfer Korean won to friends and family while traveling.
To complement the app, Shinhan Card is introducing two prepaid cards compatible with TripPass. Starting April 1, users can pre-purchase the TripPass prepaid card via the TripPass app or the Interpark Triple app and collect it at CU convenience stores inside Incheon International Airport. The cards will also be available at the gift shop of the National Museum of Korea.
Users can recharge the cards either digitally or at convenience stores. They can load funds using existing MasterCard, American Express, or JCB-branded cards, or with exchanged Korean won at CU and GS25 locations nationwide.
The prepaid cards come equipped with public transit capabilities, allowing travelers to use them on subways, buses, and taxis. Tourists can also hail taxis using the “i.M Taxi” service directly from the TripPass app with a simple member verification—no separate registration required.
A Shinhan Card spokesperson said, “Through our financial and authentication platform TripPass and the associated prepaid cards, we aim to introduce a more convenient and rewarding K-finance experience to foreign visitors.”
The company added it plans to continue developing services tailored not only to tourists but also to foreign workers and international students residing in Korea.
The move reflects a growing trend in South Korea to streamline digital services for the increasing number of foreign visitors and residents, with further enhancements expected ahead of 2026.
