SEOUL, Korea, Feb. 13 (Korea Bizwire) – A survey said the most serious traffic violation in the mind of Korean drivers is following traffic without regard to the signal and thereby blocking the intersection. According to the Korean National Police Agency on February 12 based on a survey on ordinary citizens and traffic experts, the three most flagrant traffic infractions were traffic light violation and cutting in on the lane abruptly, as well as gridlock-causing junction blocking.
The police agency will accordingly tighten its crackdown on violators all around the year using camcorders, cameras installed on intersections, and portable cameras. To a question “Which one of the violations do you find most shameless?” 276 respondents said intersection blocking, followed by traffic light violation (256) and cutting-in (211), with multiple votes allowed.
In addition, the agency will implement a new rule forbidding motorists from watching TV while driving starting on February 14. It will give a grace period of about two months until the end of April and impose a fine of 60,000 won and 15 penalty points after May 1.
