SEOUL, March 20 (Korea Bizwire) — A colony of Japanese waxwings on their journey to the north was spotted snacking on pyracantha fruits near Gyeongpo Lake in Gangneung, on March 19. The twenty to thirty Japanese waxwings were too tired and hungry to be scared of crowds at the lake, even feasting upon pyracantha fruits offered by humans. The birds drank from the lake and rested on the trees, and some of them even flew to nearby residences to locate more fruit.
Japanese waxwings, which are rare in Korea and famous for the punk pigments on their heads, usually travel to Russia around this time of year to breed. They are designated as Near Threatened on the TUCN Red List.
