SEOUL, Apr. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — As Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge have been enticing Korean customers to get rid of their old phones, the number of subscribers changing carriers was 63 percent higher than usual last weekend.
According to mobile industry sources, the number of subscriber switches for the major carriers on April 10, when the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were released was 17,215, which was a 77 percent jump from 9,727 on April 3. Sources said that although the three major carriers did not divulge specific numbers, the number of subscribers changing their phone at their current carrier agency is estimated to have jumped twice last weekend.
LG U-Plus and KT saw net additions of 991 and 335 subscribers respectively last weekend, while SK Telecom’s subscriber base dropped by 1,326. LG U-Plus has been unfolding unprecedentedly aggressive marketing strategies, and KT has provided price cuts of up to 211,000 won (US$ 192). LG U-Plus and SK Telecom are offering maximum rebates of 194,000 won (US$ 176) and 140,000 won (US$ 127) respectively.
