LG Electronics Puts OLED TVs at Forefront of CES 2015

SEOUL, Jan. 5 (Korea Bizwire) – LG Electronics Inc. will showcase organic light-emitting diode (OLED) TVs and its first quantum dot TV at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicking off Tuesday (U.S. time) in Las Vegas, as it pushes ahead with the two TV models as the next growth engine. The 55-inch model will be unveiled as LG’s 2015 OLED TV, the company said, following the global debut of larger-sized 65 and 77-inch models in August last year.

The OLED TV lineups will come in the “flexible design” by LG, which allows a user to control the shape of the TV screen to and from either flat or curved.

The introduction of the smaller OLED TV reveals LG’s intent to focus on the product as part of its future strategy, analysts said.

LG has been the pioneer of OLED TVs, which are made up of organic layers that emit light in response to an electric current. But its high price has been a hurdle in putting the product into the mainstream. At the beginning of last year, the 55-inch curved OLED was tagged 15 million won (US$13,515) in Korea.

LG has managed to bring it down to a quarter of that price in 2014 as it tries to increase OLED production to make it more affordable for mass purchase.

The 2015 OLED TV has incorporated U.S. audio equipment maker Harman Kardon’s stereo system to better provide a wider sound spectrum, LG added.

During the four-day show, LG Electronics also plans to roll out its first ultra high-definition (UHD) TV made with a quantum dot film, which will be another showdown between LG and its home rival Samsung Electronics Co. since Samsung is expected to showcase its own quantum dot TV at the CES.’

Quantum dot technology has surfaced as one of the upcoming display sources with its strengths in color reproduction and lower costs, prompting global players to compete for its development.
