SEOUL, May 23 (Korea Bizwire) — LG Uplus Corp., jointly with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and Easy Traffic Co., has introduced an emergency vehicle preemption (EVP) system, a priority traffic light control software that extends green lights to allow ambulances to pass without delay.
The traffic light control center receives GPS data from emergency vehicles every second, and remotely controls traffic lights.
LG Uplus worked with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and Seoul Metropolitan Fire & Disaster Headquarters over the last two years to complete EVP tests across 1.78 kilometers in Seoul’s Gangbuk District.
One ambulance and one fire truck from Gangbuk Fire Station passed two large intersections and 12 crosswalks, where the traffic lights turned green 200 to 500 meters before the vehicles passed through the area.
Fire trucks with EVP were able to drive 70 percent faster than the average speed, and the average time spent to reach the destination was reduced by 41 percent.
Without the EVP, the average speed was 16.54 km/h. With the EVP, it was 28.10 km/h.
