SEOUL, Nov. 3 (Korea Bizwire) – The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced on Thursday that it has established a pilot blue carbon habitat in Gangjin, South Jeolla Province, aimed at technological development to create a ‘breathing’ coast. The MOF will host a completion ceremony for the initiative on Friday.
Blue carbon refers to carbon-absorbing elements within the marine ecosystem, including marine organisms such as mud flats, reeds, suaeda japonica, seagrass (a type of marine seed plant), and seaweed. Blue carbon plays a pivotal role in addressing climate change within the marine sector.
The creation of the ‘breathing coast’ pilot habitat is part of the MOF’s blue carbon promotion strategy, which was originally announced in May.
In August, the MOF selected the Mangho mud flat in Gangjin, taking into account factors like coastal stability, vegetation environment, and construction feasibility, and established a habitat for halophytes and protective facilities like oyster nets.
The ministry plans to conduct quarterly investigations and observations of the trial habitat and aims to develop standardized technological instructions through practical demonstration by 2026.
