SEOUL, Feb. 4 (Korea Bizwire) — More than half of working women in Seoul have more than one job for economic reasons, a survey showed Wednesday.
The Seoul Metropolitan City Government and the Seoul Women’s Development Institute jointly conducted a survey of 1,247 working women between 20 and 59 years of age who live in Seoul.
Of the total, 55.3 percent or 690 respondents said that they have more than one job.
Among those who have multiple jobs, 43.2 percent said that they do so because a single job is not enough to cover the cost of living or because it’s difficult to get a job that offers a stable income.
Roughly one-third of the respondents said that they have more than one job to make some extra money besides living expenses. In other words, 75.3 percent of the working women who have multiple jobs are doing so for economic reasons.
The share of those who gave ‘self-realization’-type answers remained low at 24.7 percent.
Working women with more than one job have longer work hours than those with a single job.
The survey revealed that 40.4 percent of working women with multiple jobs said they work for more than nine hours a day on average, higher than 22.4 percent of those with only one job.
The primary reason for having multiple jobs was different by age. For those in their 20s, 37.9 percent said they had more than one job to make extra money.
For those in their 40s, 32.8 percent said they did so for self-realization. For those in their 50s, 51.3 percent said they had multiple jobs to cover living expenses.
