SEOUL, March 1 (Korea Bizwire) — Naver Webtoon, an online platform for digital comics run by South Korea’s leading portal operator Naver, on Tuesday unveiled new technology that converts photos and videos into webtoon-style images on a real-time basis.
During developer conference DEVIEW 2023 held at COEX in Seoul on the same day, Naver developers introduced the company’s WebtoonME technology and a demo version.
WebtoonME is based on deep learning technology to convert real images into webtoon-style characters and backgrounds. The real face and motions of the users are converted into webtoon-style characters.
To reflect the characteristics of webtoon characters, which have various facial features, it also used a variety of computer graphics-based pre- and post-processing technologies.
Naver Webtoon stressed that this technology can help readers have greater fun in webtoons.
The technology can be used for the development of new content, including interactive webtoons in which readers become a part of webtoon stories.
