SUWON, South Korea, Aug 23 (Korea Bizwire) – The Rural Development Administration announced that it has developed a technology called “Virtual Screening” that allows animal pathologists to predict the mechanism and effectiveness of specific target proteins in domesticated animals’ immune system and physiology.
The virtual screening technology is based on a premise that molecules with similar structural patterns are alike in terms of their response to external stimulus. This is a process of discovering useful genes and biological materials through a technique of computer simulation.
The National Institute of Animal Science within the RDA has led research projects in virtual screening in the areas of domesticated animal immunity and discovery of immunity-enhancing materials through the combined use of information technology and biotech.
Chae Han-wha, clinical researcher at the institute, said, “Virtual screening is a technique that has been widely adopted in the field of pharmacology. By applying this technique to the animal science area for the first time, we hope to find materials that can enhance animal immune systems in response to a rise in animal disease under globally warming conditions.”
