DAEJEON, Dec. 11 (Korea Bizwire)The state-run Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on Thursday that it had developed a cutting-edge optical repeater that ensures seamless 5G service, even indoors.

The newly-developed optical repeater enables airports, stations and large shopping malls to offer 5G service at a maximum speed of 20 Gbps.

The optical repeater was developed using radio over fiber (RoF) optical transmission technology, which can send signals without distortion up to a distance of five kilometers by turning 5G wireless signals into optical signals, as well as 5G base station interface technology that wirelessly connects outdoor 5G base stations with indoor antenna systems.

The 5G base station interface installed on the rooftops of apartment buildings receives a 5G signal from neighboring base stations.

Then, the 5G signal is converted into an optical signal by the RoF technology-embedded terminal box and transmitted to indoor antennas installed on each floor.

The research team explained that the newly-developed optical repeater eliminates the need to install additional base stations, adding that the installation cost is cheap and the size of equipment can be greatly reduced.
