PYEONGCHANG, Sept. 4 (Korea Bizwire)A village in Gangwon Province is drawing attention by launching a “shared shopping basket” campaign aimed at protecting the environment from micro-plastic problems and reducing the use of plastic bags to create a healthy environment.

The movement, which will be joined by the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (NACF) Daehwa Branch in Pyeongchang County, Gangwon Province, will first donate leftover shopping baskets to shared shopping carts placed at retail stores and traditional markets.

Plastic bags are made by extracting raw materials from oil, and when incinerated, toxic substances called dioxins are released.

Accordingly, the use of shopping baskets is meaningful in promoting eco-friendly consumption and realizing a healthy village.

The shared shopping basket initiative was originally scheduled to be carried out from October.

However, shared shopping baskets have been placed in the NACF Daehwa Branch since August 28 for the benefit of families who visit their hometown during the Chuseok holiday period.

Township chief Kim Doo-gi said that although the movement started at one store, the final goal is to create a village that does not use a single disposable plastic bag as it gradually expands its shopping basket program.
