SEOUL, Jan. 15 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s trade minister said Wednesday the government will expand efforts to protect the country’s intellectual property through trade agreements amid the growing popularity of Korean entertainment content overseas.
Trade Minister Cheong In-kyo made the remark during a meeting with around 30 trade experts to discuss strategies to protect the country’s intellectual property in the global market, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
“South Korean businesses have been posting trade surpluses in the intellectual property sector but are also simultaneously facing challenges, including unauthorized copying of content online and copyright infringements,” Cheong said.
“As the economy based on digital and artificial intelligence brings both challenges and opportunities, the government will make efforts to improve trade rules to ensure South Korean technology and content are properly recognized in the global market,” the trade minister added.
During the meeting, experts advised the government to play a proactive role in protecting intellectual property through free trade agreements, especially amid the weakening role of the World Trade Organization.
