SEOUL, Jan. 26 (Korea Bizwire) – Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha used her attendance at the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, to promote the upcoming Winter Olympics as a chance to ease tensions with North Korea, the foreign ministry said Friday.
“Kang explained the government’s efforts to lessen tension on the Korean Peninsula and build peace through the recent inter-Korean talks over North Korea’s participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics,” the ministry said.
Kang on Thursday participated in two sessions about the security situation on the peninsula and joined a separate luncheon with state heads and ministers.
Later in the day, she co-hosted “Korea PyeongChang Night,” which brought together about 300 guests, including Olivier Schwab, the WEF’s executive director for China, and Kris Peeters, deputy prime minister of Belgium. The event was co-hosted by the organizing committee for the PyeongChang Olympics.
In her keynote speech at the event, she said that the upcoming Olympics could create the momentum for building peace and prosperity on the peninsula as well as in Northeast Asia and the world.
The event also included a range of cultural programs featuring Korean cuisine and music, the ministry added.
